"Transforming urban educational
outcomes student by student, school

About the IUE
The New York City public school system is the largest in the nation, serving
1.1 million students a year in over 1600 schools. Despite being in one of the world’s most
affluent metropolitan areas, the city faces daunting educational
challenges. More than 75% of public
school students come from low-income backgrounds. Only 60% graduated from high school last
spring. School buildings rarely have 21st
century technological capabilities, often are overcrowded, and too frequently
are in dire need of repair. There is
much work to be done.
At the same time, the possibilities within the city’s schools are
impressive. The Department of Education
has won the prestigious Broad Prize for Urban Education; various school and
district restructuring innovations developed here and have become part of the
nation’s understanding of good educational practices; educators, families, students,
and communities bring a wealth of diverse strengths and passions to the work of
educating our youth. There is much to
celebrate.
To this mix, The New School’s work in K-12 education adds creativity,
excellence in research, and a powerful commitment to social justice. The Institute for Urban Education (IUE) at
The New School provides university-wide programming and research to promote
effective, visionary partnerships between the university and K-12 education in
the New York City area. The IUE has four
inter-connecting goals:
