  • This page outlines requirements for the degree in History (BA, History). Students can also study this subject as a minor or as part of a self-designed major (BA or BS, Liberal Arts). 

    Requirements Worksheet

    Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the chair of the program. Students are encouraged to download the Program Requirement Worksheet for History to track their progress. Students must receive grades of C or better in all courses taken to fulfill major requirements.

    Requirements for the History Major (BA, History)

    The major in History requires completion of 13 courses, distributed as follows:

    • Two foundation courses, chosen from
      • LHIS 2016 Doing History
      • LHIS 3001 Uses of the Past
      • ULEC 2400 America Is Hard to Find
    • Two introductory history courses, chosen in consultation with an advisor in the History program
    • Five additional history courses, at least four of which must be at the 3000 level or higher and three of which should be part of a thematic cluster (e.g., gender or U.S. history). Students are encouraged to take one course covering a period before 1789 and one covering non-U.S. history.
    • Three thematically related courses outside the major, chosen in consultation with the chair or an advisor in the History program
    • One Senior Capstone. Choose from
      • Senior Seminar
      •  Individual Independent Project
      • Collaborative Independent Project
