If you wish to declare a single area of study, please fill out the
area of study declaration form.
Consult the requirements for each area of study listed below, including the specific track requirements. The following rules apply to all the areas of study:
- Each area of study requires completion of at least 13 courses, including a senior capstone. A grade of C or better must be received in every course that is used to fulfill area of study requirements.
- Each student works out, in consultation with the student's advisor, a program of study that fulfills the area of study requirements and satisfies the student's academic interests.
- Transfer credits and other exceptions: For each area of study, the chair has the authority to decide which courses will fulfill the requirements and when exceptions will be permitted to the published requirements.
- Students admitted to Lang as transfers may apply as many as three courses taken at other institutions to meet their area of study requirements with approval from the chair; a student admitted with 30 to 44 transfer credits may apply up to two courses with permission, and a student with 45 to 60 transfer credits may apply up to three courses.
- Students who study abroad or away may take up to three courses that will apply toward their area of study at the host institution, subject to preliminary review by their advisor and final approval by the chair on their return.
- Students interested in taking courses at Parsons The New School for Design, Mannes College The New School for Music, or the The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music should contact their area of study chair before registering to determine whether the courses may be applied to area of study requirements.
- A senior capstone linked to a student’s area of study is counted as one of the required courses.
- As many as two internships may be counted.
- Students in the Lang/Parsons and Lang/Jazz combined BA/BFA degree programs may apply a maximum of three courses from their BFA program toward their Lang area of study requirements.
