The Suicide by Nikolai Erdman, adapted by Richard Nelson, from a literal translation by Xenia Youhn. Directed by Jesse Berger

Banned by Stalin before its first scheduled performance, The Suicide is a satirical take on the relationship between the individual citizen and society's ideals. Semyon, an average guy living in the new worker's paradise of Soviet Russia, finds himself unemployed and living off his wife Masha. He is convinced that the only solution is to shoot himself. When news of his intention spreads to his neighbors, Semyon receives a lot of advice about what would be worth dying for: the church, liberty, love, art, business, beauty… For which noble cause might Semyon kill himself? The ridiculous dances with the tragic in this masterpiece of Russian farce.
