Arts in Context

Arts in Context

The Arts in Context concentration is designed for Arts majors who wish to study intensively both one of the arts disciplines and a liberal arts discipline (Literary Studies, Culture and Media, Philosophy, Psychology, Urban Studies, etc.). You could think of Arts in Context as a mini-double major. This concentration serves students who have strong and diverse interests. It locates the study of the arts within a broader intellectual and cultural context. Recent Arts in Context majors have combined music with philosophy, visual arts with psychology, dance with culture and media, and theater with education studies. Note: students who wish to use two of the Arts fields (dance, music, theater, visual arts) to fulfill Arts in Context requirements need special permission of the Arts in Context program coordinator. To declare this concentration, a student must complete the Area of Study Declaration Form and consult with the Arts in Context program coordinator to discuss his or her learning goals and select appropriate courses.

Arts in Context students are encouraged to apply for the International Arts: Arts in Context program at the American University of Paris to study abroad during their junior year.

Since Arts in Context is an individualized program, students have various options for their Senior Capstone project, including the senior performance courses offered by the Theater and Dance Programs and the LINA (Integrated Arts) senior seminars. Note that all Arts in Context senior projects must include a written component.
