The Max Adler Award for Leadership in Debate commemorates the joy in intellectual engagement that characterized Lang student Max Adler, an award-winning member of the debate team who died in 2008. This award is given annually to a student or students in good academic standing who demonstrate an eagerness to engage in the kind of spirited exchange and open discussion that enriches the Lang community.
Tishman Environmental Merit Scholars
Together with a select group of students from across the country, Tishman Environmental Merit Scholars engage in conservation research, develop environmental education programs, work on grassroots campaigns to advance pro-environment policies, and support programs to foster sustainable development in communities throughout the state of Alaska during the summer. This program is co-sponsored by The New School and the Alaska Conservation Foundation, and we congratulate Madeleine Boga on her selection this year as the scholar for Summer 2012.
Vera List New School Art Collection Writing Award
Vera List Award winners actively engaged the university's art collection and found inspiration in the Vera List Center's 2011-2013 focus theme, thingness. Thingness, literally the nature of matter, invites us to explore the material conditions of our lives in an age of social media, virtual realities, and disembodied existences. Among the winners was Lang student Justin Allen, who transformed David Hammons' African American Flag into a poem about color, abstraction and politics. The winning essays will be published in Canon, the interdisciplinary student-run journal of The New School for Social Research.
