Opportunities for Undergraduates

Education Courses with IUE Field-Based Components

Each semester, at least one Education Studies course is offered that works with IUE’s college-readiness programs, offers a fieldwork component, and places Lang students in NYC public schools.

Spring 2010, the courses are:

Education At Work: IUE Practicum  (LEDU 3951, Kristina Solum, 4 credits)

This practicum provides Lang students with placement opportunities, creating and facilitating workshops and enrichment activities on college readiness and access, in under-served New York City public high schools. Under the supervision of the Institute for Urban Education and the Education Studies department, Lang students will be trained to work in the schools and will develop an understanding of issues in urban education, such as educational equity and race, class and gender issues, as they relate to college readiness and access. Students must have 10 free hours a week for their high school placements in addition to the weekly seminar time.

Building Bridges for High School Students: IUE Practicum (LEDU 3919, Cheryl Keise, 2 credits)

In this practicum, Lang students explore methods, dilemmas, and practices of teaching first-hand and will be trained to create and facilitate workshops for high school students enrolled in The Institute for Urban Education sponsored Bridge courses. Lang students will be supported by IUE staff and Bridge Faculty to understand the high school students varying needs and develop innovative activities to support them accordingly.

Work at the IUE

The Institute has a few part-time positions for Lang students each semester. Responsibilities include working with school-based programs for high school students to prepare for college, developing and assisting with IUE programs and events, organizing Lang student volunteers, and general program/office support. Positions include:

Work-Study Position (paid). Apply through the IUE.

Public Programs at the IUE

Lang students are encouraged to participate in the IUE’s programs for high school students and educators. These include College Explorers High School Visits to Lang, college planning days for high school students and families, and other events.

Volunteer Opportunities

Many of the events listed above rely on Lang student volunteers and are a great way to get involved with a minimal time commitment. Interested students should email IUE@newschool.edu to request information and join the mailing list. Students may also speak with Cheryl Keise or Kristina Solum at the Institute for Urban Education, 65 West 11th Street, Rm 353.
