Ceremonial Events

Since most wedding receptions feature dancing, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music provides groups that are primarily grounded in jazz and swing, yet can play other styles to fit the situation. Some receptions do not include dancing; in this case, music is selected as for a cocktail reception, with the ensemble chosen according to the budget and size of the event.

Cocktail Receptions
The most popular music choice for relaxed receptions is cocktail piano. If the reception site does not have a piano, the musician can usually provide a portable electric keyboard.

The music is generally a mix of jazz standards (Gershwin, Porter), light classical (Mozart, Haydn), and popular music from the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Other possibilities for cocktail reception music include small classical groups (guitar & flute; string trio; etc.) or small jazz groups (piano & bass; saxophone & guitar; etc.).

Parties
(dinner, birthday, retirement, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, etc.) Music for parties usually serves as a background. Jazz and classical music are equally popular. Budget, taste, and size of audience determine instrumentation. Since the setting is often smaller than more formal private functions (such as wedding receptions), soloists, duos and trios generally work well. Cocktail pianists are always a good choice for this situation due to their flexibility.

Corporate Events
The choice of music for corporate events can vary greatly depending on size, budget and theme. For an upbeat event, jazz or ethnic music tends to work best. For a more intimate, quiet setting, classical jazz works well.

A solo violinist, pianist, or piano trios are all popular choices. Some clients use the music to break up the normal dinner and cocktails routine with concert-like settings for small portions of the party.

Jazz Groups
Jazz groups come in all assortments and sizes, depending on the client's occasion, event site, taste, etc. Usually a group consists of a melody instrument (for example, piano, saxophone, trumpet, trombone), with harmonic (piano, guitar) and rhythmic (string bass, drums) accompaniment. Groups may also include a vocalist if desired.
Most jazz groups are very flexible and can play selections ranging from swing (Goodman, Miller, Ellington), to standards (Gershwin, Porter, Berlin), to bebop (Davis, Parker, Coltrane, Monk), to blues and pop.

The size of the group should be in proportion to the number of people attending the event. For dancing, it is a good idea to include a drummer for rhythmic support.
