George CablesPianist
Profile:New York native George
Cables went to the High School for the Performing Arts in Manhattan and then spent two years studying
classical piano at the Mannes School of Music in the mid 1960’s. Meanwhile he was learning jazz and making
himself an important part of the NY jazz community. By the end of the decade he had done tours
with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Sonny Rollins. In the 70’s Cables worked mostly on the West
Coast in bands led by Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, Art Pepper, Woody Shaw,
and Freddie Hubbard, and finished that decade with a two-year stint as Dexter
Gordon’s pianist. In more recent years
Cables has toured the world mostly with his own trio and recorded over 25
records and CD’s as a leader. He is
widely admired as one of the most important pianists and composers of his
generation.
