A one-semester survey of the great tradition of Western classical music prior to 1900. Students study the formal and aesthetic qualities of selected works and consider these works in relation to their historical and social contexts.
Special attention is given to developing an understanding of the relevance of this musical tradition to contemporary improvising musicians. 3 credits
