The New School for
Jazz and Contemporary Music

Composers’ Forum

The students and the instructor work in the first two or three meetings to agree on an instrumentation for which all students write. Once the instrumentation has been chosen, each student writes a piece for it. The pieces are performed and recorded by professional musicians at the end of the semester. The seminar meetings give the students an opportunity to examine each others’ works-in-progress under the tutelage of the instructor. The instructor also provides students with general information on compositional practice and history, as well as specific guidance on the pieces they are composing. Final enrollment is at the discretion of the instructor. 2 credits
