Is there a deadline for the application?

The deadline for fall admissions is January 1. The deadline for spring is September 15. Late applications are accepted until November 1. Financial aid should be submitted by April 1 for fall and November 15 for spring. Please refer to DEADLINES.



Can I send videotape for my audition?
No, we prefer an audiotape or CD.



What are the audition requirements?

Requirements for a live or tape audition are three standard Jazz selections performed with a rhythm section. The selections should comprise one up-tempo tune, one ballad, and one blues. The applicant should demonstrate his/her improvisational abilities on each selection. Note pre-screening requirements for drum, guitar, and voice applicants. Please refer to AUDITIONS for complete pre-screen and audition requirements for all instruments.



May I include original tunes?
You may include original tunes as an additional selection. Do not replace one of the required standards with an original tune.



How long will it take to know if I've been accepted?
Applicants for fall will be notified by April 1. Applicants for spring will be notified by November 15. Late applicants will be notified on an individual basis.



How does financial aid work?
Students may receive a merit scholarship award determined at the initial audition as part of the acceptance package. Students are encouraged to apply during Audition Period 1, as acceptance and scholarship are available on a limited basis to students auditioning during Audition Period 2 (late auditions). Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA form (on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov) to determine eligibilty for Federal grants and loans.

Is there housing for freshmen?
All first time freshmen are guaranteed dormitory housing for the first year.



Is it mandatory for freshmen to live in the dorms?
No, it is not mandatory though it is recommended that students begin in the dorms giving themselves a chance to get acquainted with New York City and the surrounding area.



What is a typical schedule like for a freshman?

New students are tested during the orientation week on subjects such as ear training, theory, theory & performance, piano (non- pianists), sight-reading, and rhythm. Placement in classes is determined on the basis of these entrance evaluations. Each semester a student will also take liberal arts class and music history.

Are private lessons included in the curriculum?

Yes, students are evaluated at the start of school for their proficiency on their instrument. Students beginning in proficiency will have 10 lessons per semester, out of proficiency students have 9. Students may split their lessons after they have been out of proficiency for a year. Please refer to FACULTY.



Does The New School help students get gigs?

New School Jazz offers professional music industry and performance opportunities though the New School Jazz Outreach Project featuring Jazz industry internships and a gig office. Please refer to the OUTREACH PROJECT.



Does The New School give tours?
Prospective students and their parents are welcome to tour the facilities. Tours are offered Wednesday and Thursday at 3:00pm while school is in session. Please call at least 1 week in advance. You will be shown the facility and then have the opportunity to observe one of our improvisation ensembles. Students interested in scheduling a tour should call the Jazz office at 212-229-5896 ext. 4589 or set up a tour online.
