JAZZ CURRICULUM___________________________BACKFORWARD

LIBERAL STUDIES

Drawing on the University-wide resources of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music offers a unique liberal studies curriculum. Students, under the guidance of their advisors, can select a group of courses in the humanities and the social sciences that reflect the diversity and intellectual depth to be found in a major urban university. Students may participate, where appropriate, in the liberal studies programs of the university's Eugene Lang College, The New School for General Studies, or Parsons.

Liberal Studies Requirements
The BFA degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music requires the successful completion of a minimum of 38 credits in liberal studies, including the History of Music and general liberal arts. The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music also offers liberal arts courses which provide a unique perspective on Jazz and American culture. These courses include the Culture of American History, Jazz and the Culture of the African American Experience, and the Culture of American Literature. OPTIONAL FIVE-YEAR
COMBINED
BA/BFA DEGREES

America's higher education system presents many of our brightest and most talented young people with a difficult choice: either to pursue special abilities in a conservatory-type college, like New School Jazz, in which professional study inevitably takes precedence over broadly based liberal arts, or to attend a traditional liberal arts college, taking as much music as possible, but recognizing that, in most cases, this path may fall far short of the requirements for entering the music profession.

Taking advantage of its unique setting within a major urban university, New School Jazz and Eugene Lang College structured a five-year curriculum in which students simultaneously complete two degrees, the music BFA and the liberal arts BA. This program draws heavily upon the resources of The New School's undergraduate liberal arts division, Eugene Lang College, and requires students to take 90 credits of liberal arts courses and 90 credits of music study. A student in this five-year program completes both a full music and liberal arts curriculum, preparing for direct entry into the music field, or for graduate study in such areas as law, business, the social sciences, or the humanities. Students interested in pursuing this option should ask the Office of Admissions to furnish them with descriptive materials and the catalog of New School Jazz.
