THE APPLICATION PROCEDURE
• |
Students applying for the fall semester should submit their applications by January 1. Applicants considering the spring (January) semester should apply by September 15. |
• |
Live auditions are held in February and March. If you would like to schedule a live audition for the citywide
audition week in March, you must submit your application by December 15. |
• |
Applying early allows applicants to take full advantage of financial aid, scholarship, and live audition opportunities at the school. Late applications are due by March 15 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester. |
TRANSFER APPLICANTS ONLY: |
• |
Transfer applicants with a previous 4-year degree do not need to submit high school transcripts. |
• |
All other transfer applicants must send an official high school transcript along with an official college transcript from each school attended. Please send original documents. |
• |
Follow all other general application procedures. |
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS ONLY: |
• |
Supply official English translations of all documents and credentials (services available). |
• |
Submit scores from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination. |
• |
A TOEFL score of 550 or better is required (213 for the most recent version of the test) of all international students whose primary language is not English. |
• |
Follow all other general application procedures. |

All applicants with international transcripts are required to submit an original transcript along with a certified English language translation. Applicants who would like to transfer academic credits earned at non-U.S. institutions are also required to have their transcript(s) evaluated by World Education Services (www.wes.org), our preferred provider, or another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). A Course By Course Evaluation Report must be prepared for each transcript. We recommend that you start the evaluation process as early as possible and submit all required documents to WES (or another provider) to ensure the timely completion of your evaluation report. Request that your report be sent to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, University Admissions, 79 Fifth Avenue, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10003. (If you apply online, search for “New School Jazz" when requesting our institution.) If another provider is unable to send the report directly to the school, please collect and send the evaluation report along with a Materials Cover Sheet.

AUDITIONS: |

A performance audition is required of all students applying to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. |
• |
A pre-screen tape/CD is required for all applicants on drums, guitar, and voice. The tape/CD must be received within one week of submitting your online application. |
• |
Vocalists who pass the pre-screen must audition live at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music;
drummers and guitarists may audition live or online or submit an audition tape/CD.

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIP: |
• |
Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA form (on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov) to determine eligibility for federal grants and loans. |
• |
Students may receive a merit scholarship award determined at the initial audition as part of the acceptance package. |
A COMPLETE APPLICATION INCLUDES: |
• |
Completed and signed (electronic signature for online applicants) application form. |
• |
Nonrefundable application fee of $100 (online credit card payment, check, or money order). |
• |
Personal statement. |
• |
A live or recorded audition (pre-screen tape/CD for drummers, guitarists and vocalists, please see ekomi). |
• |
Official high school/secondary school transcript or school records. |
• |
One letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or professional who is able to comment on your
qualifications for study at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. We will accept one additional (optional) recommendation if you choose to submit one. |
• |
If there are any extenuating circumstances you would like the Office of Admissions to consider, please submit a
letter of character reference from a teacher, employer, or other community leader. |
Note: Accepted applicants must submit a final official high school transcript, including graduation dates and final grades.
