NEW JAZZ—NEW YORK—NEW SCHOOL
The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music provides students with a comprehensive technical, conceptual, and historical grasp of jazz and related contemporary music. Teaching takes place in multiple environments: in a required studio curriculum of theory, improvisation, ear training, piano, reading, rhythmic analysis, ensemble playing, music history, and composition/arranging; in instrumental or vocal private lessons, where students meet one on one with the great jazz performers of New York City; in an elective curriculum that features more than 70 performing ensembles and advanced composition, arranging, analysis, and technology courses; and in master classes, additional to listed coursework, featuring artists including Barry Harris, Lee Konitz, Sheila Jordan, Lewis Nash, Jim Hall, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, and Dave Douglas, among many others. The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music also offers professional music industry and performance opportunities through the New School Jazz Outreach Project featuring Jazz industry internships and a gig office. These programs provide hands-on experience, develop networking skills, and create potential job opportunities. All of these new opportunities offer important knowledge and skills that will prepare today’s performing jazz artist for a successful career in music, a reflection of our mission in “respecting tradition, embracing innovation.” We invite your participation in the wonderful experience that is The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
