Application Tips
Apply Early!
Our deadlines are the “Received By” date and not the “Postmarked By” date. Give yourself sufficient time before the deadline to thoughtfully and thoroughly complete your application. Late applications are reviewed after those received before the deadlines. International applicants should apply early to allow enough time to complete the visa application process, which is separate from the admission application.
Request Official Transcripts Promptly
Ordering transcripts can take time, especially over the summer or during school holiday periods. If you attended high school or college many years ago or under a different name, your school may take longer to locate your credentials. Do not assume your most recent transcript will suffice. The Office of Admission requires that you submit an official transcript from
every
school you attended, even if you took only one course or received a failing grade.
Clearly Identify All Materials
Clearly print the information on your application to help us avoid data entry errors. Please note any variations of your name that might appear on high school or college transcripts. Your full name, as given on the application, should appear on the application fee check and on all essays and résumés. Items of two or more pages should be stapled together. Typed essays are preferred.
Make Copies
Keep your own copies of your application and all other documents you send to the Office of Admission, except official transcripts which must be forwarded unopened. All materials submitted become the property of The New School and cannot be returned to you or released to a third party on your behalf.
Update Us
The New School must be able to communicate with you throughout the application process. If you move, please notify us of your new address and phone number(s). Also, let us know if your email address changes. The latter is is very important as email is often used to inform applicants about the status of their applications (missing credentials, available appointment times, etc.).
Keep Track
You are the only person who can guarantee the timely processing of your application. If, for example, the Office of Admission has informed you about missing credentials such as reference forms or transcripts, you will be expected to follow up on that yourself. When requesting transcripts or faculty recommendations, please consider other schools' schedules, including summer hours, holidays, and busy periods like graduation.
