Lock Your Workstation

It is important to prevent others from using your computer when you step away. You must know your login ID and password before trying of any of these options.

Please note the following item from the Information Security Policy (PDF), "the maximum idle time before the screen saver invokes is 15 minutes."

Windows XP

Use Screen Saver Password Protection

  1. Right click on an empty spot on your desktop. Select Properties and then select the Screen Saver tab.
  2. Choose the screen saver you want to display when your computer is inactive. Select the minutes of inactivity before your screen saver activates.
  3. Check the On resume password protect box, click OK.
  4. Now whenever your screen saver comes on, your workstation is locked. You must enter your login ID password to resume work.

Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete

  1. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt and Delete keys. Select Lock Workstation.
  2. The screen is now locked until you enter your login ID and password.

Windows 7

Use Screen Saver Password Protection

  1. Right click on an empty spot on your desktop. Select "Personalize", then click on the "Screen Saver" icon.
  2. Choose the screen saver you want to display when your computer is inactive. Select the minutes of inactivity before your screen saver activates.
  3. Check the box to the left of "On resume, display logon screen." Click OK.
  4. Now whenever your screen saver comes on, your workstation is locked. You must enter your password login ID password to resume your work.

Mac X 10.4 and higher

Use Screen Saver Password Protection (Desktop & Screen Saver)

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences, choose Desktop & Screen Saver.
  2. Choose the screen saver you want to display when your computer is inactive.
  3. Use the Start screen saver slider to set the minutes of inactivity before your screen saver activates.
  4. Close the window to save your changes.

Use Screen Saver Password Protection (Security)

  1. Select System Preferences, then Security.
  2. Select the Require a password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver check box.
  3. Close the window to save your changes.
  4. Now whenever your screen saver comes on, your workstation is locked.
  5. You must enter your login ID and password to resume work.
