The New School has used the Blackboard learning management system (LMS) since 2006. During the 2013/2014 academic year, the university will transition from Blackboard to the Canvas LMS. Like Blackboard, Canvas provides secure spaces for posting readings and other documents, holding class discussions, collecting and grading assignments, etc. Canvas is more intuitive and user-friendly than Blackboard, and also allows greater use of media such as video, holding live conferences, and more.
For Fall 2013, all classes will be available in Blackboard, as usual, but instructors will have the choice to teach in Blackboard or in Canvas. Beginning in Spring 2014, all classes will use Canvas.

STUDENTS AND FACULTY: Instructors may use Blackboard or Canvas to post assignments, announcements, readings, and content such as lectures, video, etc., as well as for discussions, blogs and wikis, grading, and more. With Canvas, instructors can hold live video conferences, and instructors and students can easily post video and audio files.
You may use Blackboard or Canvas with Macintosh and Windows computers. Mobile apps are available for Apple mobile devices and Android phones.
In classes with rich media components such as video and large sound files, you will need access to a broadband Internet connection (cable or DSL, for most users). Individual classes may require additional software. Your instructor will let you know about any special software requirements early in the semester.
