The India China Fellowship program is a two-year program in which leaders and learners come together to generate new ideas, debate policies, and design solutions for key challenges facing India and China. The program offers participants opportunities to bring perspectives from the United States to important debates concerning future developments and policies in India and China. Looking beyond narrow economic and political indicators, India China Fellows, visionary professionals from the public and private sectors, are able to broaden and reshape this dialogue.

The India China Fellowship program enables The New School's interdisciplinary community to intervene in important debates about the future economic, social, and cultural development of India and China. Fellows include economists, urban planners, business leaders, environmental designers, public intellectuals, and human rights activists from China, India, and the United States. At The New School, faculty and student projects related to India or China are eligible for ICI funding. New School faculty members are encouraged to collaborate by applying for India China Fellowship positions.

The fellowship program is organized around four 5–14 day residencies in New York, China, and India. Each residency provides occasions to exchange ideas among fellows and local experts and to design collaborative projects.

The India China Fellowship program began with the 2006-2008 Urbanization and Globalization program. Ten fellows, five each from India and China, initiated their conversations at the inaugural conference, Cities in a World of Migration: India and China in Global Perspective, held in New York City at The New School in May 2006.

The second cohort (2008-2010) is exploring the theme of Prosperity and Inequality. A residency and an international conference was held in March 2008 in New York City to start this second round of collaborations. The conference brought together both the first and second cohorts of India China Fellows in a dynamic forum.

An important goal of the fellowship program in 2008-2010 is the full integration of the India China Institute into academic life at The New School. This is a time of considerable curricular evolution at the university, particularly in the fields of social science, sustainable design, and international affairs, much of which is deeply invested in addressing issues of prosperity and inequality.

The third cohort will explore Social Innovations for Sustainable Environments. The third fellowship program will commence with a March 2010 residency in New York.
