India China Institute Mission Statement
India and China share many interests
and face many similar challenges, and the United States is increasingly
engaged with both countries on many levels. The India China Institute
(ICI) fosters collaborative research and institutional and personal
connections among these three countries. ICI scholars analyze political
and social issues and trends in India, China and the United States with
the goal of encouraging leaders, managers, opinion-builders, and
academics in all three countries to work constructively together to
promote social and economic progress, address mutual problems, and
identify areas for future cooperation. Based in New York City at The
New School, ICI, in nurturing this three-way conversation, is emerging
as the hub of an international network of institutions and
activities that is deepening our understanding of global processes. Continue reading...

At the heart of ICI is a competitive two-year fellows program.
Leaders and learners come together to generate new ideas, debate
policies, and design solutions for key challenges facing India and
China through transdisciplinary and transnational conversations. 2008-2010 ICI Fellows Announced.

| ICI Announces the 2009 Student Fellows - The India China Institute, now in its fifth year, is proud to announce our newest round of Student Fellows – the third of its kind in our brief history. ICI received applications from both graduate and undergraduate students representing a wide array of The New School’s diverse divisions, including The New School for Social Research, The New School for General Studies, Eugene Lang College, and Parsons The New School for Design. Through a rigorous selection and interview process our selection committee chose five excellent candidates to be awarded the Fellowship. |

Kosi as Metaphor: Learning to Unlearn on Water - ICI Fellow NIMMI KURIAN writes about the recent dam breaches in Nepal, the resultant flooding of the Kosi River in India and the subsequent humanitarian disaster. Over 3 million people have been displaced in India and Nepal and a quarter of a million farmland ruined as a result of the deluge. "The intellectual discourse on water too has been problematic because of its inability to project alternative scenarios as well as raise critical new questions," Kurian writes. | Kul Chandra Gautam (bio here), former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, has been appointed as India China Institute Senior Fellow. Mr. Gautam will play a key role in advising the Nepal Democracy and Development Initiative, India China Institute, The New School. |
| Ford Foundation supports a new 3-year collaborative project with Yunnan University and University of Calcutta. The New School’s India China Institute announced a new initiative to develop a unique trilateral curriculum with partner universities in India and China dedicated to redefining India-China interactions by creating a framework for collaborative study and research. The three-year initiative is generously supported by a $525,000 grant from the Ford Foundation. See the press release here. |
