Managing Waste and Improving Resource Efficiency
100% Computer Recycling collection

Ongoing Initiatives

To manage waste and improve resource efficiency, the university:
  • launched a successful recycling program for metal, plastic, glass, paper, and cardboard.
  • developed a pilot composting program in cafeteria kitchens.
  • replaced rented water coolers with owned coolers and bottle fillers.
  • recycles 100 percent of e-waste, including computers, appliances, mobile phones, and audio-visual equipment.
  • substitutes cardboard boxes with reusable plastic crates.
  • prints 90 percent of marketing and collateral materials on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper with FSC-certified venders.
  • Utilizes office paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content.
  • Offers biodegradable cutlery and plates in New School cafeterias.

Future Goals

The university will:
  • augment purchase of local and organic food for cafeterias.
  • continue to reduce the number of delivery cycles of products throughout the university.
