What is the CMHSAC?
The Master of Arts degree in Psychology with a Concentration in Mental Health/ and Substance Abuse Counseling (CMHSAC) is a program designed to combine:
- a firm grounding in general psychology culminating in a Masters degree in Psychology from The New School for Social Research
- graduate level training in mental health and substance abuse counseling
- opportunities to satisfy the academic eligibility requirements for the Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) examination.
This program is a joint offering of the Department of Psychology at The New School for Social Research and the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate program at the Adult Division of the New School University. Why was CMHSAC developed?
The CMHSAC program was developed for several reasons:
- Drug related problems are a major concern for a large number of people in our society and are frequently a central part of complex human problems (e.g., "dual-diagnosis").
- There is a growing interest in the field of psychology in clinical work and research related to drug addiction.
- A professional with a Masters in Psychology with a Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling has a unique foundation for making a substantial and integrative contributions to the field of substance abuse and mental health treatment.
- Health care reform in general, and managed care in particular has contributed to a growing interest at the State and National levels in standardizing and raising the educational and training standards for providers of substance abuse services. A professional with a Masters in Psychology with a Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling who is also academically eligible for CASAC certification (which involves meeting both academic and practical experience requirements and passing an exam) is potentially in a an advantageous position for securing future employment throughout the substance abuse/mental health system.
Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology: The Department of Psychology at Rhode Island College invites applications for a tenure-track position in clinical psychology for Fall 2008. We seek applicants with commitment to teaching, research, and mentoring who will add to our current Department's strengths. Requirements include: Doctorate from an APA-accredited program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology; college-level teaching experience. Preferred: a) evidence of teaching effectiveness in undergraduate and graduate courses such as Drugs and Behavior (or similar course), Research Methods, Community Psychology, and Personality, b) ability to supervise undergraduate Chemical Dependency/Addiction Studies (CDAS) practica and internships; c) evidence of active research program; and d) eligibility for Rhode Island professional certification/license in chemical dependency or related areas.
