The New School-Beth Israel Center for Clinical Training and Research has been cited in American Psychologist, the official journal of the American Psychological Association, as an example of innovative graduate program developments (Belar, C.D. (1998) Graduate education in clinical psychology, American Psychologist, 53, 456-464).

The Center represents a unique partnership between Beth Israel Medical Center (visit their website) and the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology Program at New School University. Training and research opportunities in the areas of brief and long-term psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, geriatrics, health psychology, neuropsychology and family therapy are available at the Center. Beth Israel Medical Center introduces students to realities of clinical work usually not present in graduate school clinics, most notably, severely disturbed patients, and the collaborative nature of psychiatric hospital work in general.

This integrated program is designed to help students develop as scientist-practitioners in a wide variety of clinical contexts, including inpatient care facilities, drug detoxification wards, and outpatient care programs. The Center Director, Megan Warner, Ph.D., is a member of The New School for Social Research Psychology Department faculty and has a cross-appointment in the psychiatric department at Beth Israel Medical Center. Clinical supervision is provided by NSSR faculty and by Beth Israel staff psychologists and psychiatrists.

Psychology externs have numerous training opportunities at Beth Israel Medical Center (BIMC), one of the largest voluntary hospitals in New York City. The patient population at BIMC is diverse in culture, ethnicity, and in socioeconomic backgrounds, making Beth Israel an ideal environment for training. The Department of Psychiatry, under which psychology externs train, is one of the largest departments in the Medical Center. It is also one of the most academic departments in terms of research and educational productivity.
