The
following procedures constitute the admission application process:
- Form.
A completed application for admission must be filed with The New
School for Social Research Admissions Office.
- Recommendations.
Three letters of recommendation are required; forms are included
in each application packet. When possible, recommendations should
be from faculty members who have instructed the applicant in the
same field in which he or she plans to study. Due to the volume
of applications received, the Admissions Office cannot accept
more than three letters of recommendation. Additional letters
will be disregarded.
- Fee.
A nonrefundable application fee of $50 must accompany the application
form. Checks should be made payable to New School University.
Payment by major credit card is also accepted. Applications submitted
without this fee will not be processed.
- Transcripts.
One official transcript from each undergraduate and graduate institution
attended is required. Only official transcripts sent directly
to The New School for Social Research Admissions Office by the
issuing institution will be accepted. International applicants
must supply certified English translations of all credentials
that are not in English.
- GRE
Results. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) applicants should
request that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) forward this
score to The New School for Social Research. The ETS code number
of The New School for Social Research is 2501. GRE General
Test scores are required of all US applicants; however, those
who received their BA more than five years previous to the date
of application may apply without submitting GRE scores. Subject
tests are not required.
- Statement
of Objectives and Goals. Attach a one- to three-page statement
of your academic objectives and career goals. Please include relevant
biographical information. If your recent experience has been other
than academic, describe it briefly, indicating its relation to
your decision to apply to The New School for Social Research.
- Writing
Sample. An academic writing sample is required. This writing
sample may be a paper submitted for a course, a journal article,
or an excerpt from either, of ten to twenty pages. To be considered
for the PhD program in Anthropology, Philosophy, or Political
Science, a more substantial writing sample (e.g., a master’s thesis
or major research paper) is required. The writing sample must
be in English.
- Deadline.
Admission applications for students wishing to be considered for
fall semester fellowships and special scholarships must be completed
by January 15. An application is not considered complete until
all items listed above have been received by the Admissions Office.
Applications
for admission completed by January 15 are processed by mid-March.
Admissions decisions will also indicate a scholarship determination
for those who have requested institutional financial aid. Admitted
students will receive complete details of their financial aid package
in a letter which will follow shortly thereafter. Applications received
or completed after January 15 are considered for admission and financial
aid on a rolling basis. The deadlines for fall semester and spring
semester are August 1 and January 15, respectively.
For
immunization requirements, see the “Registration and Expenses” section
of the Bulletin.
