NON-DEGREE STUDY POLICI ES

Qualified persons may take graduate courses at The New School for Social Research without enrolling in a degree program subject to the following conditions. Non-degree students are permitted to take a maximum of three courses in total but may not take more than two courses in any semester. No more than two semesters of non-degree study are permitted, even if the three-course limit has not been reached.

Students who wish to continue at The New School for Social Research after two semesters of non-degree study must apply to a degree program. If admitted, they may petition for credits earned in non-degree study to be applied toward fulfillment of their degree requirements. Acceptance of previous credit is at the discretion of the program in which the student is matriculating.
 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Non-degree applicants must submit the following items to the Admissions Office by the application deadline:

  • A completed Non-Degree Application Form (Adobe PDF)
  • A two-page letter of purpose
  • One academic or professional letter of recommendation, preferably from a professor who has instructed you in the same discipline as the department to which you are applying
  • An official transcript from the accredited college or university from which you received your bachelor’s degree, indicating courses, grades, and the date the undergraduate degree was awarded
  • The $50 application fee (non-refundable)

You must state on the application form which course(s) you wish to take at The New School for Social Research. Include at least one second choice, in case your first choice is not approved. Courses at the 5000-level are usually open to non-degree students without restriction, but 6000-level course require permission of the department and the course instructor. (The Admissions Office will request permission; applicants should not attempt to contact instructors independently.) Non-degree students may not take courses at the 7000-level.

Deadlines
Non-degree applications for the spring 2008 semester must be submitted by January 15. Spring 2008 registration begins the week of January 14. The deadline for fall 2008 semester is August 29. Registration for fall 2008 begins the last week in August. An application is not considered complete until all items listed above have been received by the Admissions Office.

Tuition and Fees for Non-Degree Students
Tuition for the 2007 academic year is $1,430 per credit. (A three credit course costs $4,290). Students are also charged additional university and school fees totaling $115 per semester. Non-degree students who take more than one course in a semester, may audit the second course. The audit fee is $62 per credit. (Audited courses appear on transcripts but cannot be used to meet degree requirements.) Tuition and fees are normally payable at the time of registration.
