The Institute for Retired Professionals was created in 1962 to provide a university-based learning community for the retired and semi-retired. In intellectual and collaborative environment, students design the curriculum themselves and utilize their life experience to enrich classroom materials. Students also explore the broad range of educational choices offered by The New School and participate in other aspects of university life. The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School is dedicated to exploring the role of the arts in developing a civic culture of tolerance and pluralism in the United States. Its public programs and forums are designed to respond to social and political issues of our time as they are being articulated by visual and performing artists. The center engages the university community, the people of New York, and national and international audiences in an exploration of new possibilities for civic engagement.
The Rose and Erwin Wolfson Center for National Affairs

Since its founding in 1919, discussion of public policy issues has been at the heart of The New School. Issues like balancing the rule of majorities and the freedom of minorities and nurturing both consensus and debate are particular challenges for the United States. The Rose and Erwin Wolfson Center provides a venue where vital differences surrounding ideas like these can be aired openly for the benefit of society.

The geopolitical landscape has been radically reshaped by the end of the Cold War, the rise of new powers in Asia and Europe, and the emergence of new international problems ranging from ethnic and national conflicts to mass migrations. The World Policy Institute promotes critical debates on global developments and, through its association with The New School's master's degree program in International Affairs, helps train tomorrow's professionals in the field.
