Parsons’ highly regarded Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Fashion Marketing is a professional degree program offering an intensive course of study for motivated students who want to launch new careers, advance in their fields, or start their own businesses. The program’s curriculum provides the foundation in marketing, merchandising, and retailing that you need to enter the fashion industry.
The online degree option in Fashion Marketing enables people who can’t come to New York, who work full-time, who need to study from home, and/or who want to study part time to complete this comprehensive degree program entirely online from anywhere.
Diverse Student Body
Parsons’ AAS Fashion Marketing students come from a remarkable range of academic and professional backgrounds. They are writers, stockbrokers, dancers, chefs, attorneys, teachers, and more. Most already hold undergraduate degrees and some have earned advanced degrees. These diverse students have one thing in common: They are serious about pursing a career in the business side of fashion—and they come to Parsons to redirect their careers, and, by extension, their lives.
Where do you go from here?
The AAS Fashion Marketing program prepares students for careers in:
Fashion Marketing and Beyond
At Parsons, students gain a thorough understanding of the business of fashion. Washington native Sahar Sokhandan, who graduated with an AAS in Fashion Marketing in 2006 and is now an assistant buyer in couture and designer evening collections at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, said, “We were very lucky at Parsons to work with teachers who were in the field and drew on firsthand experience. In other programs, professors don’t necessarily tell you what to expect in the real world. At Parsons, your teachers say, ‘You know what, I am a merchandiser, and this is what I do every day.’ So you know exactly what you’re getting into.”
As a Fashion Marketing student, you get the skills and training you need to launch or advance your career. You’ll gain the technical skills in classes such as Fashion CAD (computer aided design) and Photoshop. Plus you’ll explore new and innovative issues in fashion including sustainability, distribution strategies, and working globally.
A distinctive feature of the Parsons AAS program is its “cross pollination” with Fashion Studies, a design-centered AAS program. Fashion Marketing and Fashion Studies students have the opportunity to share several online classes, studying both design and marketing, along with color theory, fashion history, and electives such as global fashion marketing or fashion law. As a result AAS graduates are better prepared to bridge the divide that often exists between the creative and business sides of the fashion industry.
A Global Online Learning Environment
Parsons’ AAS Fashion Marketing curriculum and faculty of experts in the fashion industry are the same on campus and online. Classes are asynchronous, meaning that you need not be online at the same time as the professor or classmates, so you can fit your class work around your schedule.
Fashion markets are global and so are online courses. At Parsons, the information exchanged in online classrooms becomes very relevant and real when you’re getting input from students discussing markets in Singapore, India, or Kansas City, for example. In-class conversation in all Parsons AAS programs is at a high level because of our students’ diverse life experiences and educational backgrounds.
As an online student, you’ll have the opportunity to do self-developed internships with guidance from the AAS program. Because Parsons is part of The New School, a leading university in New York City, you’ll have access to New School resources from pod casts and videos of events to The New School’s Kimball Library online archives of images and designers.
Requirements of Fashion Marketing Online
Fashion Marketing students who plan to complete their degree entirely online must have a prior undergraduate degree or sufficient undergraduate credits to fulfill the AAS degree requirement of 21 credits in humanities, including six credits of English. Non-native English speakers must achieve a TOEFL score of at least 640.
