Assessing the Economic Rise of China and India

A special lecture will be given by Pranab Bardhan, professor of Economics at the University of California. He will analyze the rate and pattern of growth in China and India over the last quarter century, with special focus on poverty, inequality, environmental fallout, and other political economy issues of the nature of capitalist development and those of governance and accountability.The talk will draw upon Bardhan's recent book, Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay: Assessing the Economic Rise of China and India (Princeton University). William Milberg, professor of Economics and Department Chair, and Sanjay Ruparelia, assistant professor of Political Science at The New School for Social Research will serve as discussants. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Economics at The New School for Social Research.
