Coming Out in the Developing World: Exploring Eastern Europe’s Hidden Closets

6:00 p.m.

Coming Out in Eastern Europe 1
This panel seeks to evaluate the present state of LGBT rights in Central and Eastern Europe and address some of the tensions and paradoxes, with LGBT human rights caught between the flourishing gay pornography industry in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary and growing homophobia in other parts of the region. While Czech gay porn actors enter the American porn industry, anti-gay protesters threw Molotov cocktails and stones at an October gay pride parade in Belgrade, Serbia, injuring 140 people. Does the open porn industry help the cause of LGBT rights in Eastern Europe? Or does it hinder them?

Panelists include Michael Lucas, gay pornographic actor, director, activist, and founder/CEO of Lucas Entertainment and Jeffrey Escoffier, one of the founders of OUT/LOOK: National Lesbian and Gay Quarterly, who has published widely on LGBTQ history, politics, arts and culture, and sexuality.
