Throughout
the school year, the Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) presents
lectures on timely topics for members, the New School community, and the
general public. This year, as it commemorates 50 years at The New School, the
IRP celebrates the richness and diversity of faculty voices at the university.
Fridays @ One is supported by a generous gift from the Estelle Tolkin Memorial
Fund. Professor James
Miller is a member of the Politics faculty and the Committee on Liberal Studies
at The New School for Social Research. His most recent book, Examined Lives: From Socrates to
Nietzsche,
is the basis for his talk "Is the Examined Life
Worth Living?" Professor Miller received his PhD in the History of
Ideas from Brandeis University; his recent research is devoted to the history
of philosophy and the relationship of modern democracy to dissenting mass
movements. In his youth, he was a music critic for Rolling Stone
(in the 1960s and 1970s) and Newsweek (in the 1980s).
