Due to continuing power outages in Lower Manhattan, The New School will remain closed until Monday, November 5, therefore this event has been cancelled. Please check the events calendar should this be rescheduled. Like
design itself, design studies is a multifarious enterprise. Some see it as a
branch of the humanities that examines how aesthetic and intellectual histories
continue to inform design today. Others view it as a social science with
knowledge and research techniques that can enhance the work of institutions,
businesses, foundations, NGOs, and think tanks. Still others understand design
studies as an integral dimension of the kind of design practices that
prioritize research and questions over finite solutions. To mark the inaugural
year of Parsons' MA Design Studies program, this symposium will shed light on
these perspectives, and, at the same time, explore the terrain they share in
common. Welcome: Joel Towers, Executive Dean, Parsons Sarah E. Lawrence, Dean, School of Art and Design History and Theory, Parsons Introduction: Susan Yelavich, Director, MA Design Studies program, Parsons Keynote: Peter-Paul Verbeek, Socrates Chair, Philosophy of Man and Technology, University of Twente, The Netherlands
