Studying English as a Second Language at The New School
The New School offers courses in English as second/foreign language at low-intermediate (Level 3) to advanced (Level 6) levels. Currently, we do not offer instruction to true beginners. A short placement test is required of all students.
The Courses
There are two 6-week programs in the fall and spring and two 5-week programs in the summer. Students may enter at the beginning of any 6-week or 5-week program.

Certificate in English as a Second Language: Students who need an official transcript of record of their English language studies must enroll for the Certificate in English as a Second Language. The certificate is awarded for successful completion of a minimum of 100 hours of ESL coursework. Students who enroll as certificate students but do not complete 100 hours of coursework are still entitled to an official transcript of the courses they have taken. Certificate students pay a $60 registration fee per term. They receive grades of AP (Approved) or NA (Not Approved) for each course. All international students who have a student visa to study English at The New School must enroll in the certificate program.
Study Options in English as a Second Language
Individual Courses: All courses may be taken separately or in combinations according to students' personal preferences. (Exception: International students studying under a student visa from The New School are required to take the 18-hour full-time Intensive Study program below.)
Intensive Study Program: The English Language Studies Center has developed a unique program for intensive study of English as a Second Language. The student consults with an advisor to build a full-time personal curriculum (18 hours per week) based on a selection of courses at an appropriate level.

Fees
Tuition for English courses at The New School is competitive with other comparable programs in New York City. Total fees for the 18-hour intensive study program are $4,120 for 12 weeks plus $60 certificate registration fee. Tuition is pro-rated if the program is taken for 6 weeks (fall or spring) or 5 weeks (summer term, $3,400 for 10 weeks).

The New School is located in beautiful, historic, and peaceful Greenwich Village, a neighborhood of tree-lined streets filled with restaurants, nightlife, and cultural venues in downtown New York City.
The School
The New School itself is a center of intellectual and cultural activity. Many lectures, film screenings, concerts, and other events are free of charge to students enrolled in the ESL Intensive Study program.
The New School for General Studies is one division of a unique urban university, founded in 1919.
