Methods and Techniques of Teaching ESL/EFL NELT3411

Enrollment limited. Permission required; call (212) 229-5372. This course is open to anyone interested in or currently teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language. Participants learn the basics of student-centered teaching. They learn to plan lessons that integrate contextualized grammar instruction with the teaching of vocabulary and all four language skills. They also learn about error correction and classroom management. Emphasis is on communicative, contextualized learning. Participants are required to observe at least three hours of ESL classes and teach an ESL/EFL class for a minimum of 20 hours during the semester. English Grammar for ESL Teachers NELT3412

13 sessions. Thursday, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., beg. Sept. 17th $990.

Teaching the Sound System of English NELT3414

4 sessions. Saturday 9:30 - 1:00 pm. Beg. September 26th $385.

The sound system of English is studied with special attention given to those characteristics that learners of English as a foreign language often find difficult. Participants learn to develop contextualized pronunciation exercises and incorporate them into an ESL syllabus. (1 credit)


Using Authentic Materials to Teach ESL NELT3432

4 sessions. Sat., 2:00 - 5:30 p.m.., beg. October 24th $385.

This course presents techniques for choosing and using appropriate TV and radio broadcasts, films, cassette tapes, newspapers, magazines, brochures, flyers, and other media. Participants learn how to prepare exercises that incorporate these kinds of materials, and, as time permits, the class experiments with them. (1 credit)


ESL Teaching Practicum NELT3416

13-week seminar, Wed., 6:00 - 7:50 p.m., beg. September 16th

plus 30 hours of student teaching individually arranged. $990.

Enrollment limited. Permission required; call (212) 229-5372. Certificate students who have completed the prerequisites teach an ESL class for at least 30 cumulative hours. Prerequisites: Methods & Techniques of Teaching ESL/EFL, English Grammar for ESL Teachers, and one materials class. Students who are ready to do the practicum must notify the English Language Studies Center one term in advance; notification should be made during the registration period for the preceding academic term. Teaching component is at an off-site location to be arranged. (3 credits)

Professional development workshops are offered for working ESL teachers and others interested in the field. Enrollment in the Certificate in Teaching English program is not required.


Teaching Writing NELT3415

Mindfulness for Educators: Principles and Practices NELT0530

Mindfulness for Educators is a new approach to professional development for teachers that focuses on the inner dynamics of teaching and learning. This course introduces five core principles and three mindfulness practices that help teachers bring out the best in themselves and their students. Participants learn the essential tools of mindfulness through guided instruction, readings from the current literature on applied mindfulness, and focused experiential inquiry in the classroom.
