David E. Van Zandt, President

To the New School community members,

We were shocked and saddened today to learn of the massive earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan and the devastating tsunami that has struck the country. Our hearts go out to the people of Japan and to their families and friends around the globe who are anxiously awaiting news of their safety.

On behalf of everyone at the university, I offer deepest condolences to those in our community who have suffered a loss in this tragedy.

Here at The New School, our immediate priority is reaching out to our students abroad and to our New York-based students who have families in Japan. Students seeking counseling and assistance can reach our Office of Student Health Services either by visiting the office on the third floor of 80 Fifth Avenue, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, or by calling 212.229.1671 (choose option 1 or option 2) 24-hours a day. As a community, we need to support one another especially in a time like this. If you know of individuals in our community who have been touched by this tragedy or are suffering from it, please reach out to support and comfort them, and let them know about these resources.

Across the country and the world, emergency aid organizations are marshaling resources to deliver immediate and long-term help to the people of Japan. Please consider making a contribution to an aid organization of your choice or one of those listed below:

The American Red Cross (or donate $10 by texting "redcross" to 90999)
Global Giving's Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund
International Rescue Committee

During this difficult time, I know that our entire community will support the many students, faculty, and staff who have been affected by this tragedy.

I appreciate your concern and will continue to update you as I learn of news that affects our community.
