Profile:

Teva Bjerken teaches the Alexander Technique to performers, bringing her career in dance to the art of performance. She trained and was certified by the American Center for Alexander Technique (ACAT) and served as an assistant teacher at both Juilliard and Mannes School of Music. For the six years of its existence (1997-2002) Teva taught Movement for Actors at Gregory Abels Training Ensemble (G.A.T.E.) based in the Stella Adler tradition. Her dance training included the scholarship program at American Ballet Theater, the high school division of North Carolina School of the Arts, the apprentice program of the Pennsylvania Ballet, and Sarah Lawrence College (BA, 1987). As a member of Codanceco (NYC), a repertory company of original works, she developed dance/theater pieces with a member of the Pina Bausch Company, a deeply insightful process inspiring her work in the theater. She premiered other dance theater works of various choreographers/directors at the American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Los Angeles Opera, Dance Theater Workshop, La Mama, The Kitchen, and P.S. 122. At the 1989 “Bessie” (Dance/Theater) Awards she was cited as a collaborator/performer for a work winning a Bessie for Best Collaboration between director/choreographer, composer, and performers. In the fall of 2006, Teva began a one-year post-graduate training with senior Alexander Technique teacher, Barbara Kent.
