Joe appeared on Broadway in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Dinner at Eight,The 1940's Radio Hour, Happy End and The Play's the Thing. Off-Broadway in The Boys Next Door (Drama Desk Nomination),Golden Boy directed by Joanne Woodward, Conversations in Tusculum at the Public, Says I Says He, Filumena, Boy Meets Girl and A Memory of Two Mondays. Most recently in Eugene O’Neill’s Hughie with Brian Dennehy at The Goodman Theater, Stratford Festival of Canada, Long Wharf Theatre and Trinity Rep.

His directing credits include OneSlight Hitch by Lewis Black, The 39 Steps, The Firebugs by Max Frisch, Heaven Can Wait, The Frugal Repast and A Cup of Coffee by Preston Sturges.

His fifty-plus film appearances include Presumed Innocent, The Deer Hunter, Big Business, Matewan, The Naked Gun, Natural Born Killers, Chances Are, Changing Lanes, F/X, Benny & Joon, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Brewster's Millions, Batman Forever, The Flamingo Kid, Ironweed  and Splash. His television work includes The Bronx is Burning (as Yogi Berra), Law & Order, ER, LA Law, Chicago Hope, Hill Street Blues, Rosanne,The Practice and Search for Tomorrow (with Robert LuPone).

Joe has conducted master classes and workshops at The Strasberg Institute (NY), University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Oberlin College, Tulane University, Yale School of Drama, Brown/Trinity Consortium, Bowling Green University and UCSD La Jolla.

He studied acting with Michael Howard and has an MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
