Intimate Apparel (Fri)

9:30 p.m.

The New School for Drama presents Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, directed by Whitney Gail Aronson, as part of Drama’s New Visions Directing Festival, October 4-12, October 18-26, and November 1-9. Five plays performed in repertory highlight the work of this year’s graduating directors and actors.

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a rooming house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white 5th Avenue socialites to tenderloin district prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther finds herself attracted to an Orthodox Jewish shopkeeper from the Lower East Side. What will she do for love? Esther's actions will change her and the people close to her – forever.
