Yes. All applicants to The New School for Drama are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships (MFA) or both need-based and merit-based scholarships (BFA). Please keep in mind that college and graduate school are a significant personal and financial commitment. Although scholarship funding is possible, we encourage applicants to explore additional resources for funding their education.

Graduates of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) Integrated and Studio Programs are eligible to apply for admission to The New School for Public Engagement. If admitted, Integrated graduates are awarded 60 transfer credits and enter the BFA in Musical Theater program. Studio graduates are awarded 60 transfer credits and enter the BS in Liberal Arts program. 

Graduates of the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP 21) are eligible to apply for admission to The New School for Public Engagement. If admitted, Integrated graduates are awarded 60 transfer credits and enter the BFA in Musical Theater program.

New School undergraduate students (including AMDA and CAP21 students) may take BFA Dramatic Arts classes with permission from The New School for Public Engagement. Please contact your advisor if you have questions.

Yes. The New School for Drama welcomes applicants whose first language is not English. But because theater is a language-intensive art form, we will ask that you submit a recent Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score with your application. Information on taking the TOEFL can be found at www.ets.org/toefl.

A score of 600 or above on the paper-based test, 250 or above on the computer-based test, or 100 or above or above on the Internet-based test is required for admission consideration.

International applicants who are citizens of nations where the official language is English and whose first or native language is English may be exempt from the TOEFL requirement. All other international applicants must submit a TOEFL score.

Yes. Requirements for academic programs at the undergraduate level can be significantly different than the requirements of our graduate theater program. It is important that we see a recent assessment of your English proficiency.

All applicants with international transcripts are required to submit an original transcript, a certified English translation, and a course-by-course evaluation report with their supporting materials. Course-by-course reports are prepared by World Education Services (www.wes.org), our preferred provider, or another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES).

We understand that when students come out of high school they may have been focused on one area of theater, or they may have been working in several areas (Acting, Directing, Playwriting, or Multimedia theater and design). The application will allow for each student to apply with an online audition, or a portfolio highlighting the students strengths.

BFA Acting Portfolio - Online Audition: (all of the following)

1. A one-minute video of you being yourself [video] 

2. A one- to two-minute monologue [video] 

3. A two- to four-minute scene [video]

BFA Playwriting Portfolio: (both of the following)

1. A one-act or full length play [PDF] 

2. An original prose piece (fiction, non-fiction, or memoir) [PDF]

BFA Directing Portfolio:

The director’s portfolio should include a range of production information. Please include production photographs, excerpts from your director’s notebook or promptbook, script notes or thematic essays, scheduling and administrative materials, and research. (Up to 24 files can be uploaded.)

BFA Multimedia Theater Portfolio:

Your portfolio should include research, documentation, video files, samples of your design work, administrative materials, photographs, and a writing sample. (Up to 24 files can be uploaded.)

No, The New School for Drama MFA program does not accept transfer credits. Students at The New School for Drama MFA study together in order to develop a common vocabulary and strong ensemble.

Because The New School for Drama MFA is a graduate program, all admitted students must complete a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent before enrolling. However, it is possible to apply in the final year of undergraduate studies, as long as all work will be completed before enrolling at The New School.

Yes! The New School for Drama MFA welcomes students with a wide variety of educational backgrounds. However, it is expected that successful applicants will have significant theatrical training and/or experience.

Auditions are by invitation only. Prospective students should submit an online application and all supporting materials via SlideRoom for consideration.

Actors must present a two-minute two-person contemporary scene, and a one-minute classical monologue for the initial audition.

It is strongly recommended that applicants perform a two-person scene during their audition. If you have extenuating circumstances that will prevent this, please contact the Office of Graduate Admission at 212.229.5150 or 800.292.3040 to explore your options.

If you have a strong preference for a particular audition location and/or date, you must complete your application early. Keep in mind that your New School application and your Slideroom submission must be completed before an application is reviewed and an audition is scheduled. If you have submitted your application by the deadline, and we would like to see you at the audition, we will make every effort to accommodate your preference.

It is strongly recommended that applicants audition for the program in person. If you have extenuating circumstances that will prevent this, we will, on rare occasions, accept a videotaped initial audition. A select group of applicants seen at the regional auditions will be invited to the Callback Weekend, which takes place in New York in mid-March. These individuals will be contacted by phone in mid-February. All applications are considered still under review until final admission decisions are sent out the third week in March.

Your portfolio might include a director's notebook or prompt book, script notes, thematic essays, blocking ideas, design sketches, schedules, or other administrative materials. Keep in mind, however, that each portfolio is unique, and should include materials that best speak to your directorial process. All portfolios are submitted with your online application at SlideRoom.

The New School for Drama only accepts portfolios via SlideRoom.

Your application and portfolio will be reviewed by the Directing department head and/or selected faculty from the department. A select group will be invited to the Callback Weekend, which takes place in New York in mid-March. Playwrights should submit an original full-length work. Playwrights have an option to also submit an additional one-act play. All writing samples will be submitted via SlideRoom.

Your script should include a page with character descriptions and a brief synopsis of the story. It should be in standard manuscript layout, with character names above the dialogue, in 12 point Courier or Times New Roman font. It needs to be in PDF format for submission.
