At The New School for Drama, actors, writers, and directors are challenged to explore the shared creation of theater from the very first week of classes. Over the course of the three-year program, students develop a collaborative vocabulary of artistic engagement as they originate, refine, and produce theater. The focus of this curricular and creative initiative is the CoLab (Collaboration Laboratory) class, which brings together students from all three tracks to investigate collaborative opportunities in both the creation of new work and exploration of extant material. This process extends to thesis and mainstage productions in the student’s final year, which offer further opportunities to develop a community of fellow practitioners and artistic co-conspirators that will last far beyond graduation.
