Acting: Voice

The New School for Drama's Voice and Speech curriculum, inspired and informed by Constantin Stanislavki's lifelong investigation into what he called "the best methods for evolving a natural, beautiful, pregnant speech," is a rigorous, six-semester program of study that uniquely coordinates the many shared tenets and practices of our most important vocal training systems. This enormously inclusive curriculum has one goal in mind: to offer the actor an instrument fully capable of responding imaginatively, truthfully, and freely to the creative and interpretive needs of character and play.

Our curriculum includes voice training, speech training, dialects training, singing training, and specifically designed Neutral American Speech courses for our actors who have English as a Second Language. Our design partners the process in the acting classes; and collaboration between the classrooms is a mainstay for teaching and learning.
