
The New School Media Studies and Documentary Media Certificate Programs in association with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics are pleased to sponsor a two-day conference celebrating the 20th Anniversary of P.O.V., PBS’ award-winning independent documentary film series, on Thursday, November 8, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Friday, November 9, 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Since 1988, P.O.V. (a cinema term for “point of view”) has presented more than 250 films to public television audiences across the country. P.O.V. films are known for their intimacy, unforgettable storytelling, and timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues. The conference will feature screenings and discussions on films from the past 20 seasons. Confirmed speakers include filmmakers Elizabeth Barret (Stranger with a Camera), Katy Chevigny (Election Day), Whitney Dow and Marco Williams (Two Towns of Jasper), Anthony Giacchino (The Camden 28), and Carlos Sandoval (Farmingville). Other speakers include Dorothy Thigpen, executive director, Third World Newsreel; Steven M. Gorelick, professor of media studies, Hunter College, City University of New York; and Michelle Materre, assistant professor, Department of Media Studies and Film, The New School.
The conference will be held at Arnhold Hall, Theresa Lang Community and Student Center, 2nd floor, 55 West 13th Street. Admission is $15 for both days, $10 for one day, and free for all students and faculty. For the complete schedule, visit www.pbs.org/pov/events.
