Payman Aref

Student activist Payman Aref was arrested on October 30, 2011, along with two others, and is currently in jail, although the official charges against him remain unclear. Aref had been released from prison just weeks earlier on October 9, 2011, after completing a one-year sentence and receiving 74 lashes on charges of “insulting the president.” After his release, Aref openly spoke out against the way the lashing was carried out and filed an official complaint with Evin Prison. According to his lawyer, the official charges remain unclear, but seem to relate to his speaking out against his punishment.
