Since 1990, The New School has been training qualified people to teach English as a second/foreign language. Our highly regarded Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CTE) emphasizes communicative, content-based, and student-centered learning.

Overview
- The New School awards the Certificate in Teaching English (CTE) for successful completion of a structured curriculum of five courses (see curriculum below), which includes a minimum of 50 hours of student teaching.
- Length of Study: The program can be completed in one year (two semesters) full time and must be completed in two years.
- Cost: Tuition for non-credit certificate students is listed with course descriptions. Tuition for credit certificate students depends on the student's status and the number of credits assigned to the course.
- The CTE program is open to students who have earned at least 60 undergraduate credits.
Curriculum
Courses need not be taken in the order listed except where a prerequisite is indicated in the course description. Please note: In courses meeting four sessions or less, no absences are permitted.

Admission to the Certificate Program
Eligibility
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university is preferred, but applicants with at least 60 semester credits of college-level coursework may be considered for admission at the discretion of the department. Non-native speakers of English must have a minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the Internet-based test or 250 on the computer-based equivalent.
Application and Registration Procedures
Submit the: Certificate Application Form, Writing Sample and Grammar Test (pdf)
Once the application materials have been received and reviewed, you will be contacted for an interview. An interview can be conducted either in person or on the telephone. Visit Certificates for general policy information.
Registration for Certificate Students
Students must have their courses approved by the department every term before they can register. Advising and registration may be done in person at 68 Fifth Avenue (by appointment) or by telephone: 212.229.5372.
Faculty
All members of our faculty have a PhD or an MA in TESOL or a related field. Most are experienced teachers of ESL/EFL here and abroad. Many have developed and published innovative instructional methods and materials in various media.
Information Sessions
Several times during the year, the English Language Studies Center invites prospective students to The New School for a presentation about careers in teaching ESL/EFL and the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CTE).
