The
Program Committee of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis
and The
Psychoanalytic Workshop at The New School present a lecture by Dr. David Bell on Civilization and Its Discontents: A Contemporary Perspective. Why
are we unhappy? Why are we driven to act so destructively against others, even
against our own best interests? These questions raised by Sigmund Freud in Civilization and Its Discontents, remain
as important today as they were in 1930. David Bell will explore Freud’s paper and in so doing will ask what kind
of social structures might serve to contain our destructiveness and support the
better side of our nature, and what are likely to serve the opposite aim – fan
the flames of destructiveness and limit our capacity for a more creative
engagement with the world. David
Bell is a training and supervising analyst and has just stood down as President
of the British Psychoanalytic Society. He is a consultant psychiatrist in the Adult
Department at the Tavistock Clinic and a professorial fellow at Birkbeck
College University of London. Author of Paranoia and editor of Reason
and Passion and Psychoanalysis and Culture, Bell is also one of the
UK’s leading psychiatric experts in asylum and immigration. With welcoming
remarks by Arthur Pomponio,
