The New School Summer Institute for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) brings educators up-to-date on the latest developments in the field. The program features:

Tuition

$1,800 + $80 certificate registration fee

University housing (optional)

$800 for 2 weeks. Apply separately after you register.

Schedule
Orientation Monday, July 8 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Classes Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m., beginning July 9.
Co-Curricular Activities Various times and locations
Cultural Program Activities Monday through Friday in the evenings.
Free Time Your weekends are free to enjoy summer in New York City.

Records and Transcripts

Students will receive grades of Approved (AP)/Not Approved (NA). Students who receive grades of (AP) are entitled to a Certificate of Completion from The New School for Public Engagement. All students will be able to obtain a transcript from the office of the registrar.

Workshops

Each workshop is limited to 25 students. Students will be registered first-come, first-served.

The Resourceful Teacher
Resourcefulness, one of the most important traits of good teacher, is a skill that can be developed. This course explores a variety of practices that can help ESOL teachers be more resourceful in the classroom, working with their peers, and working in their communities.

Teaching Young Learners
Explore the latest developments in language teaching pedagogy oriented to children and adolescents (ages 4 – 18), such as Content and Language Integrated Instruction (CLIL), teaching English with technology, teaching language creatively, and fostering communication in the classroom.

Teaching Teachers
This course explores principles and practices of training language teachers. Topics include designing courses, seminars and workshops; designing materials for teacher learning; supervising teachers; alternatives to traditional teacher education/training, and ways of supporting ongoing professional development. Prerequisite: prior experience in ESOL teacher training as a lecturer, mentor, supervisor, or cooperating teacher.

Co-Curricular Program

  • Student Speaker Series. Students and alumni in the MATESOL program at The New School share their research and best practices through workshops and presentations.
  • Talks by well-known ELT professionals
  • Site visits to local ESL classes in session.

Cultural Program

  • Group field trips to historical places in New York City: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, etc.
  • "Teaching with..." workshops, Friday, June 8, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Social Studies), Museum of Natural History (Science), or the Museum of Modern Art (Art and Design).
  • Night on Broadway: dinner at a midtown restaurant followed by a Broadway show (optional; dinner and theater ticket are not included in tuition).
