Eduardo Gonzales-Cueva (Peru) Graduate Faculty, Department of Sociology, New School for Social Research. Interested in the political transition of East Bloc countries and in civil society issues. He has taught "Introduction to Social Sciences" and "Sociology of Art" at Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru in 1994. He was involved in campaigning against death penalty. Writes poetry.

Layila Ivatova (Almaty, Kazakhstan)  Studied at Kazakh State National University, Almaty, Kazakhstan. Interested in Kazakh political parties, parliamentarism, and transition to democracy in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and in the world. Kanyshai Nurdinova  (Osh, Kyrgyzstan)  Docent of the Chair of Philosophy, Osh State University, Kyrgyzstan. Interested in the process of transition to democracy in the Eastern European countries and the role of women in the new society. Currently holds the position of the Chairman of the University Women's Council as well as a member of the Osh City Women's Council.

Vanda Perovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia)  Initiated and now conducts a Special Purpose course: English for Women’s Studies at the Women’s Studies Center in Belgrade. Is a supporter and an active member of the Women in Black, a feminist anti-war organization in Belgrade.

Sergei Pushkarev  (Yekaterinburg, Russia)  Department of Political Science and Sociology, Ural State University in Yekaterinburg. Interested in conducting research in political decision making and public administration. Currently teaches Political Science and Public Administration disciplines.

Dosym Satpaev  (Almaty, Kazakstan)  Political Science Department, Almaty State University, Kazakstan. Interested in the problems of pressure groups and political elite in Kazakstan. He was one of the founders of a non governmental, scientific organization "Political Research Center" at the Almaty State University.

Erikas Slavenas  (Budapest, Hungary)  Department of International Relations and European Studies, Central European University, Budapest. Interested in the transition of the East Central European states after the end of cold war. Currently works at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania as the aid to a deputy minister.

Currently works with the UN/UNDP office in Ukraine. Previously worked with UNESCO on the Chernobyl Project (created centers for the population affected by the accident). Aigul has attended a number of international seminars in Europe, and currently coordinates the TCDS-affiliated Social Science Curriculum Center at Bishkek Humanities University.

Eluisa Brunetto  (Stanford, USA)  New York University, New York. Eluisa is interested in studying democratic culture and the establishment of political institutions in former communist countries. She has a particular interest in Poland, Hungary and Romania. During her recent stay as a visiting scholar at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, she did research on the European Union’s eastern enlargement.

Lenka is interested in transformation processes, social change, and local democracy. In Eastern Europe her focus has been on the role of elites in the establishment of political institutions. Lenka recently spent some time in England, where she studied globalization and the pressures it exerts on Western European states to reform their welfare systems.

Victoria Corduneanu  (Botosani, Romania)  Department of History, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary. At CEU Victoria studied the history of nationalism in the region. She is particularly interested in the relationship between Romania and Hungary in the 1980s.

Badamdash Dashdavaa  (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia)  Political Science Department, National University of Mongolia. Badamdash teaches comparative politics at his department. He has also worked on foreign policy issues as an assistant to a member of State Great Hural of Mongolia.

Marnie Davis (New York, USA)  Committee on Liberal Studies, New School for Social Research, New York. At the New School Marnie’s studies have concentrated on the history of American Jews. In Poland she is interested in learning more about the historical, political, and cultural climate from which many American Jews came.

Dijana Dijanic (Zagreb, Croatia)  Center for Women Studies, Zagreb, Croatia. Dijana is interested in the problems of constructing national identities, in particular how individuals can use their abilities to make a change in society. In Cracow she is interested in studying problems of democratic (or undemocratic) culture and gender studies.

Marcelina Drath  (Rzeszow, Poland)  Sociology Department, Wyzsza Szkola Pedagogiczna. Marcela is interested in women’s studies, the social mobility of women, women’s rights, and women’s organizations in Poland in particular. She currently works at the School of Social and Economic Sciences in Tyczyn, Poland.

Gulzhauar Eleukenova, Almaty, Kazakhstan. Department of Philosophy and Political Science, Kazakh State National University. Gulzhauar teaches art, culture, and gender studies at her university in Kazakhstan. She is interested in expanding her knowledge of gender studies and democratic culture while in Cracow. Gulzhauar is associated with the TCDS-affiliated Social Science Curriculum Center at Kazakh State University.

Aneta Gawkowska  (Zambrow, Poland)  Graduate School for Social Sciences, Warsaw, Poland. Aneta is interested in the subject of citizenship in democratic culture, as well as in the functioning of community in liberal democracy. In her dissertation she plans to explore the communitarian - liberal debate in political philosophy.

Katarina Ginic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia)  Center of Social Work, University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Katarina works at the Center of Social Work as a teaching assistant, and has strong interest in Women's Studies. She graduated in January 1998 from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade.

Ewa Grzeszczyk (Warsaw, Poland)  Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Graduate School for Social Research, Warsaw, Poland. Ewa is interested in studying the change of values, attitudes, and lifestyles which are currently taking place in the post-communist countries. She also has a background in art history and theater.

Mondli Shadrack Hlatshwayo (Bellville, South Africa)  Department of Political Studies, University of Western Cape, Bellville, South Africa. Mondli is currently studying political science, political theory, and theories of justice in particular. He is an active participant in the university’s student government, and currently works for the South African Association of Academic Development (SAAAD).

Desiree Hurtak  (New York, USA)  Political Science Department, New School for Social Research, New York. At the New School Desiree is studying international politics and is particularly interested in citizenship and political culture in the European Union. She has traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America and has worked for a variety of international corporations.

Anar Jahangirly (Baku, Azerbaijan)  International Relations Faculty, Baku Rasuzade University, Baku, Azerbaijan. Anar is studying international relations, democratic transitions, and international organizations. Since 1995 he has been a member of the National Assembly of Youth Organizations of Azerbaijan, and has traveled to take part in several youth conferences.

Joanna Jastrzebska-Szklarska (Warsaw, Poland)  School of Social Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland. Joanna is interested in studying the interconnections between culture, ideology, and democracy. She is also interested in the role of elites in shaping political opinion. Joanna was a Fulbright scholar at Boston College in 1996-97.

Lela Javakhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia)  Research Center of the History of Georgian State and Public Democracy, University of Tbilisi, Georgia. Lela currently works at the University of Tbilisi as a researcher, as well as at the Public Relations Service of the Georgian Parliament. She is interested in questions of nationalism, conflict resolution, cultural identity, and media.

Serhij Jermoshkin (Odessa, Ukraine)  Ukrainian Language Department, Odessa State University. Serhij, a professor, is President of the Odessa Roma Association and the editor-in-chief of several journals, including Romanipe and Zlahoda. His areas of interest include political theory and concepts of nationalism.

Antonia Jokelova (Kosice, Slovakia)  Faculty of Philosophy, Presov University, Slovakia. Antonia just graduated from Presov University, where she studied Philosophy and English Literature.

Kalmina Kamenova (Budapest, Hungary)  Program on Gender and Culture, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary. Kalmina is interested in the role of women in the emerging new democracies, women’s rights, and the relationship between feminism and nationalism. She just graduated from CEU, and she also holds a degree from Sofia University in Bulgaria in Cultural Studies and Philosophy.

Ana Kron (Belgrade, Yugoslavia)  Center for Antiwar Action, Belgrade. Ana is interested in human rights, minority rights, and gender issues. From 1992 -1997 she lived and worked in Santiago, Chile. She holds a degree in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Belgrade.

Marian Kuna  (Bratislava, Slovakia)  Faculty of Arts, Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia. Marian has studied political philosophy, and is particularly interested in theories of justice and the common good.

Claudia Leeb  (New York, USA / Austria)  Graduate Faculty, New School for Social Research, New York. Claudia is interested in gender studies and feminist theory, as well as political science and political discourse. Currently a Fulbright scholar at the New School, she has also studied at San Diego State University, Princeton University, and Main University of Vienna. Took part in 1999 Democracy & Diversity Graduate Institute Cape Town.

Munkh-Erdene Lkhamsuren (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia)  Historical Department of Social Science Faculty, Mongolian National University. Munkh-Erdene is currently a lecturer at the Historical Department of the Faculty of Social Science. He is particularly interested in theories of nationalism as well as history of philosophy.

Patricia Martin (Boulder, Colorado, USA)  Department of Geography, University of Colorado, USA. Patricia is interested in the critical analysis and reformulation of traditional concepts of democracy and citizenship. She works as a teaching assistant at her department, and is involved in a variety of community organizations. She is a founding member of AVANCE, a parent-child education program working with Hispanic families along the Mexican-US border.

Ljiljana Milicevic (Petrovaradin, Yugoslavia)  Faculty of Philosophy, Department of English Language and Literature, University of Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. Ljiljana is interested in multiculturalism, nationalism, and feminism. She currently works as a librarian at the Women’s Studies and Research Center (NGO).

Ordelia Priscilla Nkoenyane (Pretoria, South Africa)  International Studies, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. Ordelia is interested in women's movements and is currently writing a masters thesis comparing women’s political movements in South Africa and Zimbabwe. She works at the Human Sciences Research Council and is conducting research on how South Africa’s new state structures seek to address gender inequality.

Nazim Nuralieva (Shymkent, Kazakhstan)  Political Science, International Kazakh-Turkish University, Shymkent, Kazakhstan. Nazim is interested in international relations, geopolitics, geoeconomics, market democracy, and economic reforms.

Larry Olomoofe (New York, USA)  Liberal Studies Department, New School for Social Research, New York. Larry is interested in the issues of culture and diversity.

Aionura Sagynbaeva (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)  Social Sciences Curriculum Center, American University in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Aionura has been a visiting fellow at Brown University in Providence and at George Washington University in Washington. She is currently coordinating the TCDS-affiliated Social Science Curriculum Center at the American University in Kyrgyzstan.

Margit Sarv  (Budapest, Hungary)  Political Science Department, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary. At CEU Margit studied public policy and the role of media in democratic countries. She is working as a news reporter at Radio Free Europe.

Mphikeleli Christopher Sibanyoni (Daveyton, South Africa)  Political Studies Department, Rand Afrikaans University. Mphikeleli is currently a researcher at the Human Sciences Research Council. He is interested in the problems of democratization and democratic consolidation in South Africa.

Gijergi Sinani (Tirana, Albania)  Head of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology, University of Tirana, Albania. Gijergi is strongly involved in human rights issues and is the Head of the Board of the Center for Human Rights.

Elizabeth Skomp (Bloomington, Indiana, USA)  Dept. of Comparative Literature and Slavic Language Studies, Indiana State University, USA. Elizabeth is interested in Russian and East European cultures as well as history, political science, and public policy. She has spent time in St. Petersburg, Russia, and is actively involved in student government at Indiana State University.

Irina Solovjova  (Almaty, Kazakhstan)  Department of Sociology, Almaty State University, Almaty, Kazakhstan. Irina has taught at the Department of Philosophy at Almaty State University and is currently a lecturer at the Department of Sociology there. She is interested in learning more about the experiences of countries with longer traditions of democracy and about their views on democratic institutions and culture. Irina is associated with the TCDS-affiliated Social Science Curriculum Center at Almaty State University.

Mohammad Tabaar (New York, USA)  Department of Sociology, New School for Social Research, New York. Mohammad is interested in comparing the history and culture of Iranian and East European Societies.

Enkeleida Tahiraj (Tirana, Albania)  Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tirana, Albania. Enkeleida is a lecturer of social policy at the University of Tirana. Until recently she worked as a journalist for a local newspaper. Currently she is the editor of the newsletter of the Women’s Center in Albania.

Chinara Tashmamatova  (Osh, Kyrgyzstan)  Department of World Languages, Osh State University, Osh, Kyrgyzstan. Chinara teaches English and does translation work in Kyrgyzstan. She is particularly interested in learning more about women’s rights and in helping to bring about greater awareness in Kyrgyzstan of issues related to women. Chinara is associated with the TCDS-affiliated Social Science Curriculum Center at Osh State University.

Sarah Valentine (New York, USA)  Liberal Studies Department, New School for Social Research, New York. Sara is interested in gender studies and theater. She considers herself a cultural activist, and is interested in creating spaces where artists can come together to exchange experience and resources, and to create a community.

Gergana Vassilieva  (Sofia, Bulgaria)  Political Science, Sofia University, Bulgaria. Gergana’s interests are concentrated in the fields of nationalism, cultural identity, and citizenship in democratic politics. She is planning on developing research in the area of nationalism and ethnic conflict.

Triin Vihalemm (Tartu, Estonia)  School of Social Sciences, Tartu University, Estonia. Triin is interested in the relationship between linguistic behavior and ethnic identity. She is working on promoting the role of language policy in the democratic political process.

Myra Watebury (New York, USA)  Political Science Department, New School for Social Research, New York. Myra’s studies have included the changing role of dissident intellectuals in Hungary, Poland, and Romania. She lived in Budapest and worked as a research assistant with Prof. Alfred Stepan, Rector of the Central European University.

Kate Wesley  (Covington, Kentucky, USA)  Government and Politics Department, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA. Kate is interested in historical experiences, socialization processes, and cultural formation and their role in integration of democratic norms and institutions.

Gayaneh Zavarian (Yerevan, Armenia)  Political Science Program, American University of Armenia. Gayaneh is interested in issues of public policy as well as gender studies. She is currently associated with the Democratic Union, an Armenian women’s organization.
