How the JDP Works

The JDP works in three different ways.

The first is through foundation grants sought for by and given directly to the JDP. When we receive foundation support to work in a region, we determine the targeted universities and research institutions which will benefit from JDP support, often with the help of the funding foundation and knowledgeable advisors. The number of institutions selected is a function of the amount of available support and the available donations. The grant support enables us to purchase the highly discounted subscriptions for the libraries, while some subscriptions to the desired journals may be given to the JDP as donations by the publishers. Libraries continue to receive subscriptions that are donated by the publishers, even after the funding ends. We are currently supported by a 2-year grant from the MacArthur Foundation for our work in Nigeria. A 2-year Ford Foundation - Hanoi grant funds our work in Vietnam and a 2-year grant from the Carnegie Corporation of NY for our work in Russia, the former Soviet Union (FSU), Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda. In 2007, the Journal Donation Project extended its work to Cuba and our work there is currently funded by grants from the Christopher Reynolds Foundation, Newman’s Own Foundation, Ford Foundation, Samuel Rubin Foundation, Rockefeller Financial Services and OSI.

The second way we work is to offer libraries the opportunity to take advantage of our very deep discounts (over 50%) by purchasing journals directly through the JDP. When we work in this way, institutions are required to provide the JDP with a modest administrative fee, 20% of the total discounted subscription costs, in order to cover a portion of the costs we incur. Thirty-eight libraries work with us in this way, by purchasing journals through the JDP. When they are available these institutions also receive subscriptions to journals they wish to have that are donated by the publishers to the Project.

The third way in which we work is to allow libraries that have been receiving only donations through the JDP to continue doing so when they are not yet in a financial position to purchase on their own and no funding is forthcoming.
