Our work in Vietnam is funded by the Ford Foundation – Hanoi since 2004. In our first two years, the JDP provided needed scholarly journals to twenty-one social science and humanities and arts institutions. Prior to our work in Vietnam, the existence at any university library of foreign language journals was rare.
In order to help increase the awareness and use of the journals which JDP provides the libraries in Vietnam, we have initiated some exciting changes. First, the JDP developed and maintains a complete up-to-date database posted on the JDP website in both English and Vietnamese which lists the Tables of Contents (TOCs) of every issue of every JDP journal received by a library in Vietnam and the journal’s location within the country. Second, three subject area groups of Vietnamese experts have been established who select articles from the journals received through the JDP and translate them into Vietnamese. The subject areas are anthropology, contemporary arts, and sociology. These articles are available on the JDP website and will be compiled yearly to form readers.
In January 2006 the JDP organized its first inter-library consortium meeting in Hanoi. The focus was on resource sharing through inter-library loans, strategies for increasing the usage of scholarly journals at Vietnamese institutions, and the possibility of collectively negotiating lower rates in the purchase of large databases. Work shops were also provided to train the JDP network librarians in the use of journal material for research.
