The JDP began its long history of work in Russia and the Former Soviet Union countries in 1990 with a grant from the Soros Foundation; we began our work with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, in 2000 and they continue to fund the Project today. From the beginning, we believed there is a need for libraries to maintain collections of academic journals which provide the most up-to-date information in any field, connecting scholars and students with the work of scholars elsewhere. By having this consistent flow of information, a country or region is guaranteed access to a minimum level of current scholarship. While there was no question that this need was enormous in 1990 when the Soviet Union, which had banned access to a great deal of Western scholarship, particularly in the social sciences, collapsed, there is no question that need continues to exist. Our primary goal in our extensive work in Russia is to maintain significant, continuous journal archives, primarily in the social sciences and humanities, in the Centers of Excellence established by the Carnegie Corporation, at 9 universities, we are also supporting other university libraries in Russia and a number of FSU Students, scholars, politicians, and the public still desperately need the resources we provide in order to participate meaningfully in the global intellectual community. Starting in 2009 the JDP has also begun to work with libraries in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and Tanzania.
