Virginia Tech is seeking
a Director for its Center for European Studies and
Architecture (CESA). This is an Administrative/managerial position
whose incumbent is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of this
special residential learning community. The
Center was established to provide University
students a residential community base from which to learn
about and experience the many cultures, economic systems, social
milieus and nationalities of Europe.
Housed in a renovated 18th century villa,
Casa Maderni, the Center offers dining, lodging and classroom accommodations.
Program capacity is 44 students housed in the Casa and elsewhere
in Riva San Vitale. CESA currently offers semester length residential
programs to Virginia Tech students from the Colleges of Architecture
and Urban Studies, Arts and Sciences and Business as well as a
varied set of shorter offerings in the summer provided by these and
other colleges.
The new Director ideally
should evidence the following competencies and capacities:
* awareness and understanding of the special needs and demands presented by students living together abroad while developing mechanisms in concert with college faculty to secure the richest possible learning experience for each resident;
* strong interpersonal
and communication skills;
* previous work experience
in an academic environment working with faculty
and college representatives of different pedagogical and curricular
traditions;
* fluency in English
and Italian;
* experience in the
development and execution of budgets, operating and
program plans;
* familiarity with
methods and mechanisms for building and sustaining both
Swiss and Virginia Tech community involvement and support for Center
operations and programs;
* knowledge and experience
in the effective management of personnel;
* significant experience
with the supervision and management of a dining
and residential facility.
Beyond these specific attributes
and capacities, the Director is expected to
have knowledge of European and Swiss culture and institutions, be
comfortable working and living in a multi-cultural
international
environment and possess
an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline.

Duties Include:
* Reporting
to the chair and national advisory board, managing fundraising, research,
grant-writing, membership recruitment and a range of outreach activities
of a national consortium of 80 universities and colleges.
*
Coordinating the work of faculty committees in the establishment and implementation
of projects that promote the development of the Council for European Studies,
an interdisciplinary and international scholarly network.
*
Supervising and managing a major web site www.europanet.org
as an interactive forum for intellectual exchange among members of a trans-Atlantic
network and as a vehicle for the wide dissemination of the Council's work.
*
Managing the Conference of Europeanists. This three-day biennial
event is attended by approximately 300 social scientists from fifteen countries.
The Associate Director will direct conference promotion, fund-raising,
and publicity.
*
Managing and fund raising for a program of research fellowships as well
as travel grants for European scholars, and produce a newsletter.
*
Designing, editing and disseminating a newsletter (in print and electronic
form) as well as other publications resulting from Council-sponsored work
*
Managing the budget, and hiring, training and supervising graduate students
for research-related tasks.
Minimum Requirements:
* BA
required.
*
Advanced degree in social science discipline with European research experience
preferred.
*
Fluency in at least one European language required.
*
Computer literacy required, including some knowledge of web programming
languages.
*
Desktop and electronic publishing capability preferred.
*
Capacity for independent work.
*
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required.
Salary commensurate with experience. Duties begins May 1, 2000.
